Description: Maggie works in Enquiries at DETI (The Department of Extra-Terrestrial Immigration) and they’re a little under-staffed. She’s confused but grateful when a handful of Teissian refugees fresh off the spaceship are allocated to her department. She is put in charge of training Ro, a charming, scaled alien with a sexy voice, cute dimples, and a lot of secrets. She knows office romances are a bad idea, but she just can’t resist after spending every day sitting opposite him. As the two get closer, however, questions arise that threaten their relationship. Why does his friend seem to hate her so much? What is he hiding about his life on his home planet? Can Maggie get Ro to open up before it’s too late? Or will his secrets overwhelm them both?

Read my review for book #1 here!

Boy, oh, boy was I relieved to find out about this series! Somehow, I got super behind in one of my  year-long challenges (imagine that!), the Romance Roundabout Reading Challenge, and out of the five science-fiction reads I’m supposed to have completed by the years end… I had two: Awaken Me Darkly by Gena Showalter, and Scythe by Neal Shusterman. Just TWO!! I had no idea I read so little science-fiction. But truth is, unless there’s a new Ilona Andrews release… it’s just not likely that I’ll pick a sci-fi romance up. Sadly :(

Knowing that Suzanne from Under the Covers Book Blog was a self-professed alien-lover, I knew she’d be able to help me out. (Please poke around their site: it’s so well done. These ladies are insane and some of t he best book bloggers to look up to and follow). Luckily, she had tons of blog posts and videos on the subject, filled with recommendations and I found this series. It appealed because it’s definitely sci-fi, with the wholly alien, barely humanoid heroes that dominate the series, but it also reads like a contemporary romance. For a mood reader such as me, who is not in the mood for a space-age science-fiction adventure, this was a relief. As I stare down the barrel at less than a month left to complete my year-long challenges, a series of quick reads like this one was exactly what the doctor ordered.

The book opens up with Maggie, who works in the Enquires department of the Department of Extra-Terrestrial Immigration. She answered phones, emails and all kinds of …  well, enquires … and tried to either direct them to the correct person to solve their problem, or do it herself. It’s all customer service, and with all the new immigrants that arrived during the events of the first book, they are a busy and under-staffed department. So it’s hardly surprising when she is tasked to train someone new – one of the new aliens.

HIs name is Ro, a Balin (which a species of alien), and they became fast friends. Yes, ladies and gentlemen. You do hear a friends-to-lovers romance in this one!! Their friendship was a fun one, full of easy banter and smiles, for the characters and the reader, and it was an easy decision to decide to get involved romantically.

“You know, Balin do not kiss […] I have never done it before.”
“Well – ”
“You will have to show me how,” he interrupted. “By kissing me again. I may need many to learn. I am a slow learner. Not in most things, but in this I feel I will need lots of practice.”

Ro was a cutie in this one! He was absolutely adorable, as he showed his emotions so easily through his body language. In the beginning, it was almost like a toddler. If you say no: total dejection. If you agree: absolutely, unfettered joy. He made me smile many times with his almost childlike innocence in many ways. There was one scene where they were about to leave a building and he was saw the rain and was fascinated – something he’d never experienced. Maggie encouraged him to go and try it, and he eagerly stepped outside, but flinched and winced when the rain hit his face. He ran back under the roof and looked at her squarely and said “I don’t like it.” I had to burst out laughing – the scene reminds me so much of my nephew and mannerisms when he’s eating something he doesn’t want to, for instance.

He went through the most in the book, and I have to admit that I wasn’t his biggest fan there in the middle. But it all gets wrapped up towards the end, so if you find yourself getting frustrated with him… it’s all part of the book. You’re definitely supposed to be. I was certainly intrigued as to what was going on, and I have to admit to getting completely taken by surprise when the book took it’s turn; something that was an odd pleasure, because normally with fluffy contemporaries like these (even if it featured an alien), the twists are easy to spot. That was not the case here.

I loved the friends-to-lovers trope and the workplace romance in this one, too! It’s not your typical workplace romance that’s full of angst and yearning looks, but there were enough touches of it to keep me satisfied.

Maggie herself was a great female. She was patient, understanding, bubbly and very kind. There were a few times she could be a bit wishy-washy where Ro was concerned, which was a tad hard to understand, but it’s probably more realistic than I would have liked to admit. She stood up for herself when she was supposed to, and that was appreciated.

This book is the second book in the Office Aliens series, and though each book follows a different character, I would recommend reading them in the order they were meant to be read. You woudn’t miss anything too big by reading them as standalones or out of order, but there seems to be something building in the societal background that may get missed or overlooked if you don’t do so. So: Please read these books in order :)

Overall, this book was quite a fun, flirty, twisty ride. I spent the whole first half with a big grin on my face, and the second half with a furrowed brow, which is exactly, I think, what the author intended.  It was a ride, and I had no idea where it was going, but I applaud Ms. Lancaster’s skill that kept me there and kept me intrigued.

Description: It’s 2266, and Lois Kennedy is an Intake Officer for DETI, the Department of Extra-Terrestrial Immigration.
Zir is a refugee from the planet Teiss, working in DETI’s I.T. department.
Lois and Zir just can’t get along. As far as she’s concerned, he’s rude, abrasive, and condescending. She wants nothing to do with him. So why does he never leave her alone? He must be crazy if he thinks there could ever be anything between them… right?

Hello, hello! This is Kate, reporting live and somewhat muffled from under the torrential downpour of books she needs to read in December! If you look hard, you can see my hand, sticking out from the pile, waving.

I have participated in the Romance Roundabout Reading Challenge for three years now, and I’ve loved it every year. The year-long reading challenge was previously hosted by Under the Covers Book Blog, but they chose not to host it this year in favor of a new year-long challenge, in which I am also participating. As a brief overview, the Romance Roundabout challenge, in which I am participating just for fun, by myself, this year, gives you 13 romance subcategories, and you can choose to read 1, 3 or 5 books per category. Me, being an overachiever, is reading five, and I always struggle with the sci-fi section. Unless Ilona Andrews is having a new release coming out, I’m usually shit out of luck. There I am, staring down the barrel at less than a month left in the year and I have (among other categories), three sci-fi romances to read!

Luckily, I turned to Suzanne from Under the Covers and she was quite helpful. She’s a self-confessed alien obsessor, and thinks the weirder, the better. So of course I knew she’d have some great alien recommendations, and her plentiful blog posts and BookTube videos did not disappoint. (Please poke around their site: it’s so well done. These ladies are insane and the best book bloggers to look up to and follow).

This Office Aliens series initially appealed because it’s pitched as a contemporary romance… except the main characters are from another planet. Me, not truly being in the mood for real, hard-hitting science fiction, jumped on that train and I think I’ll ride it out with all four books available on Kindle Unlimited (at the time of posting). I actually thoroughly enjoyed this read. It was fairly light and breezy, so I read it in one sitting. A very quick read! It features Lois, who works in the Department of Extra Terrestrial Immigration in 2266, in the Intake department. She works as an orientation leader with refugees from the planet Teiss after their planet was invaded and overrun, and manages all their paperwork to make new lives on Earth. But her frequent computer problems means that she’s constantly requiring assistance from a surly IT technician, and alien, who can’t seem to stand looking at her.

His Earth name is Zir, and turns out, she was completely off base about him.

“You should sit and allow me to provide for you. If my offerings please you, then if you were Volin, we would mate. But you are human, so it is much,  much more complicated,” Zir grumbled.

She thought they hated each other, but really it couldn’t be further from the truth. At least for him. Zir was… an interesting and adorable dichotomy. He was a warrior, from a race where the male’s place was to protect and provide for the woman. But he was also excruciatingly shy, a bit nervous, and very grumpy. It was cute! Frankly, he was adorable. He rented a book called “101 Dates” so he could come up with ideas, looked up recipes that both Lois and his alien palette could enjoy. He prepared him home so it would be suitable for a human, too. He did everything right… except tell Lois. Zir’s race, the Volin, do courtships very differently, and he was quite thrown when Lois didn’t want to immediately become his mate, “dating” need not apply for him.

He’d essentially been training himself to be able to best the challenge of “winning” Lois over as a mate, but as a human, she really just wanted someone she could spend time with and enjoy. This was a romantic exploration I was here for in a big way. Lois herself was a very pragmatic, independent woman who spent a lot of time being patiently exasperated. She’d been dating around a lot and for a long time looking for someone to spend her life with, but was completely thrown when Zir proposed that he be that person. Her reaction… poor Zir. The woman does not pull punches. They’d been working together, yes, but had no flirtation between them, so she was understandably taken aback.

Related Post: Rock Hard by Nalini Singh  – an office romance

The book was absolutely entertaining. It made me laugh, the one-liners were truly the height of sarcastic humor, and I was there for this romance. But the only problem is… the romance. They didn’t have a whole lot of chemistry. It could have been a lot of things: Lois was a bit too pragmatic, and I didn’t really believe that it was love. It could have been the way that the book outlined their courtship but skipped over the part where they dated for awhile. It could have been that Zir was a bit… removed. I believed that they liked each other quite a lot, but I couldn’t help but feel that they were missing a certain… something.

That said, I do recommend it, especially if you have a Kindle Unlimited membership and you’re looking for a quick read to pass the time. It wasn’t a very deep read, but it was highly entertaining, especially with this alien that was barely humanoid. It reads more like a contemporary romance, with a workplace relationship which you KNOW I love, and less like a space-age novel. So if you’re looking at this one but not sold on the “science fiction” part of the “science-fiction romance,” focus on the “romance” aspect.

Hello, lovely readers!

I recently (not-so-recently) purchased a Kindle Unlimited subscription on Prime Day this summer. There was a fantastic deal where Prime members get a three-month trial for free, and then it will be $9.99 per month after that. September will be my last month to use KU for free… so I decided to dedicate the month to reading book available for free on KU to decide whether to continue with my subscription! If you want to read more about that, click on this link!

Because of that promise to myself (we’ll see how that goes…), I’m doing a series of posts this month with a list of books available on Kindle Unlimited (KU) by trope/genre! Today, obviously, we’re exploring Young Adult fantasy and Sci-Fi, which are always so fun! Typically character-driven and a little less intense than adult fantasy/sci-fi, usually we get a kick-assy heroine who does. not. back. down!! KU has the reputation of only featuring naughty or fluffy adult books, but that is not the case!

Disclaimer: I have not read any of these books. Some have been recommended to me by Twitter friendlies, some popped up on my Amazon account and I thought they sounded interesting! Don’t hate me if you don’t enjoy them (although I hope you do)!

Only those most skilled in riding and bow hunting ride for the Relay; and only the fastest survive, for when dark falls, the nightdrakes—deadly flightless dragons—come out to hunt. Even as he waits for the uror—the once-in-a-generation ritual to decide which of the king’s children will succeed him—he knows it’s always been his brother who will assume the throne. And that’s fine by him. He’d rather spend his days away from the palace, away from the sight of his father, broken with sickness from the attempt on his life. But the peacekeeping tour Corwin is on has given him too much time to reflect upon the night he saved his father’s life—the night he condemned the would-be killer to death and lost the girl he loved. Which is why he takes it on himself to investigate rumors of unrest in one of the remote city-states, only for his caravan to be attacked—and for him to be saved by Kate.
With their paths once more entangled, Kate and Corwin have to put the past behind them. The threat of drakes who attack in the daylight is only the beginning of a darker menace stirring in the kingdom—one whose origins have dire implications for Kate’s father’s attack upon the king and will thrust them into the middle of a brewing civil war in the kingdom of Rime.

Description: The first time you meet someone, you make eye contact. You smile, say hello. Should be simple, if you’re anyone but me. The first time I met Dylan Reed, I found myself making eye contact with a different part of his body. You see, I’m very good at being shy, not to mention extremely well-versed in rambling nonsense and, unfortunately, rather highly skilled at making a fool of myself in front of a guy I’m attracted to.
At the time, I knew nothing about him and thought none of what I said would matter since I’d never speak to him again. Turns out, I was very wrong. He was the star wide receiver of the football team, one of the few players expected to make it into the NFL, and I ended up seeing him all over campus.
I might have also propositioned him, run away from him, attacked him with a cooking utensil…and…uh, maybe I shouldn’t tell you all of it. It’s pretty normal stuff, things you’d expect…from me. Eventually, the time came when I couldn’t hide anymore—not that he’d have let me even if I tried.
Before now, he never knew I was secretly watching him. Now that we see each other every day, he knows when I have a hard time looking away. It doesn’t help that I’m not the most subtle person in the world either.
He smiles at me and tells me he finds me fascinating because of my quirks. I can’t even tell him that I think my heart beats differently whenever he’s around. He thinks we’re going to be best friends. I think I have a big thing for him, and the more I get to know him, the more I don’t care that I’m not allowed to be his friend, let alone fall for him. The thing is, that’s exactly what I’m doing—what we’re doing, I think. Falling. Hard.

Oh my gosh!! I was completely not expecting this book. I’m going to be completely honest, I went into this month of Kindle Unlimited Reads with fairly low expectations. I use this subscription to sate my guilty-pleasure reads, and this will be one of the first months I actually have to pay for it, and I’m using this month to decide if it’s worth it. I kinda thought that I’d find some good smut to enjoy, and then be done. But holy crap, this book went so far beyond my expectations!!

The Hardest Fall follows college student Zoe Clark in her junior year, when the last person she ever expected to see again is suddenly her roommate in her apartment. That man would be Dylan Reed, a senior football player who she … propositioned her freshman year on a dare, and accidentally saw his man-parts in the process. The same man she made a fool in front of her sophomore year when they made eye contact in her mad dash to get away from his recognizing-eyes (even though he caught up and it was all for naught). But this third time, their eventual friendship is unavoidable, now that they’re roommates (aka, one of my favorite tropes ever!).

Zoe herself was a super fun character. She’s pretty shy around Dylan, but she also has a strong (albeit rambling) personality and doesn’t excuse her own behavior. She may be shy, but she’s very unabashed about herself and her quirks. Girl loves pizza and hilariously hoards peanut butter M&Ms, but is unquestionably, undeniably, entertainingly Zoe in every way, and she kept me laughing. Normally when authors write a shy-but-ramble-y character like Zoe, they make these long monologues that jump from one topic to the other like hopscotch, which can be a bit exasperating, depending on the monologue, but Zoe wasn’t like that. Don’t get me wrong, she rambled and bumbled and pretty much everything else… but it was quirky and attractive on her. She was honest and real, such a genuine, sincere character that I couldn’t get enough of

“Zoe,” I said, my voice lower since we were now closer. “You’re rambling again. It’s too cute, and it’s completely okay if you think of your friend as hot. I think you’re hot, too.” […]
“I didn’t say you were hot.”
“I’m pretty sure you did.”

Then there’s Dylan, who was honestly so precious to me. He was an absolute perfect match for Zoe! He’s a football player – wide-receiver – who takes a full class load and has a job. His schedule is so full, it’s crazy, but he works hard to make things work and to make time for Zoe, even if she doesn’t ask for it. Especially when she doesn’t ask for it, because she never does. He falls hard for her, and it was honestly so endearing watching this man fall to his knees for his buddy who he thinks is unavailable. Unrequited love is a fast-favorite of mine for a reason, hon. He’s also a very sincere, genuine character, which made their chemistry just go off the charts. He struggled through this whole book and I was right there with him, feeling the feels and going to battle right along with him. He went through an emotional gauntlet and I lived for it.

This was honestly such a good book!! I’m shocked!! Which is kind of rude for me to say, but it’s how I feel. This book was such a gem of a find and I can’t wait to go back and read Ms. Maise’s whole backlist *rubs hands together in anticipation*. This book had so much heart and emotion behind it, really keeping me invested until the bitter end. The plot flowed so freaking well and I’m so excited to read another fantastic book like this!! It really felt like less of a series of plot points, and more of a story unfolding in front of me, which is kind of new! I guess I didn’t realize that the books I’ve been reading lately have such clearly marked lines of this, then this, then this in the plot where I can just go “check, check, check,” but this was such a treat.

I read this book mostly in one sitting (late into the night), but kept the last 35% until the next day, where I absolutely couldn’t wait to get back to it. This is a toe-squirming, tummy-curling read, and not necessarily because of the sexy scenes, but because of the sweetness that poured out of this one. swooooned my way thorough this one 💕✨ Their banter was so enjoyable and such a pleasure, and I already miss them!

Before now, Dylan Reed never knew I was secretly watching him. Now that we see each other every day, he knows when I have a hard time looking away. It doesn’t help that I’m not the most subtle person in the world either. He smiles at me and tells me he finds me fascinating because of my quirks. He thinks we’re going to be best friends.

Today, obviously, we’re exploring books that feature second-chance romances! This is a favored trope of mine, as it often feels similar to pulling on a comfy old sweatshirt, snuggling in. Nostalgia, hope, happy memories, the resurgence of *feelings* what’s not to like?? I love characters who bump into each other randomly, then are shocked by what’s happening in that person’s life again. It’s like one of my biggest life dreams so, yes!

Disclaimer: I have not read any of these books. Some have been recommended to me by Twitter friendlies, some popped up on my Amazon account and I thought they sounded interesting! Don’t hate me if you don’t enjoy them (although I hope you do)!

Hockey and rivalry.
Mean girls and friendships.
Old loves and new chances.
One more year of being invisible.
One more year to win it all.
The countdown begins.
Senior year can’t come or end fast enough for Amelia Campbell. For the shy, nerdy girl-next-door that she is, high school is torture and all she wants is for it to be over. Having her heart broken by a popular, womanizing boy all those years ago doesn’t help the matters. Nor does his best friend who still has a habit of mercilessly teasing her. Now, she only has one year left, one year to be invisible before she can move on with her life.
Derek King doesn’t do drama, but his life is all about drama once Maximillian Sanders steps foot into his town, his school, and into Amelia’s life. Max is always around, and he is making her smile again. But the boy who once broke her heart isn’t ready to let her go. Older and wiser, Derek isn’t about to let someone take away what he wants, and he wants Amelia.
She’s set on not believing in him and on not getting her heart broken once again. He is set on showing her wrong. She says she hates him, but maybe the line between past and present, love and hate is thinner than she ever realized.

Brady isn’t even a footnote… until one unexpected run-in with him changes everything. She shouldn’t be tempted by his drawl, she shouldn’t be tempted by the promise of his kiss, she shouldn’t want him. But she does. Oh, boy, this was so not the plan.

Falling. Hard.

Description: “Oh my god. Who is that?” I get asked this question a lot. “Oh him?” I reply. “That’s just Ian.”
Just Ian is the biggest understatement of the century. Just the Mona Lisa. Just the Taj Mahal. Just Ian, with his boring ol’ washboard abs and dime-a-dozen dimpled smile.
Just Ian is…just my best friend.
We’re extremely close, stuck so deep inside a Jim-and-Pam-style friendzone everyone at work assumes we’re a couple—that is until one day, word spreads through the teacher’s lounge that he’s single. Fair game. Suddenly, it’s open season on Ian.
He should be reveling in all the newfound attention, but to our mutual surprise, the only attention he seems to want is mine.
He’s turning our formerly innocent nightly chats into X-rated phone calls. Our playful banter sports a new, dangerous edge.
I want to assume he’s playing a prank on me, just pushing my buttons like always—but when Ian lifts me onto the desk in my classroom and slides his hands up my skirt, he doesn’t leave a lot of room for confusion.
I’m a little scared of things going south, of losing my best friend because I can’t keep my hands to myself. So, I’m just going to back away and not return this earth-shattering kiss—oh who am I kidding?!
Goodbye Ian, ol’ buddy, ol’ pal! Helloooo mister not so nice guy.

At James & Peterson Investigations, that would be Cameron Grant: sullen, grouchy, intimidating, oh yeah, and sexy as hell. He can make your soul wither with a single disapproving glare. And he never, ever socialises with his co-workers.
This is why Maisie Wilkins, happy-go-lucky ray of sunshine, can’t fathom why Cameron finally decided to show up at their annual office Christmas party. Every year he received an invite, and every year he failed to attend. But not this year.
Curious as to why he’s there, Maisie can’t resist sitting next to Cameron. Before she knows it, she’s had one too many drinks and is drunkenly hailing a cab back to his place. Office party flings are not something she normally does, but despite his intimidating character, Cameron has a charm she can’t resist. Or maybe it was just those five gin and tonics blurring her judgement.
Whatever the reason, Maisie now has to navigate the awkward, tension filled waters of sharing an office with someone she’s slept with.

Say no more. I throw on baggy clothes, tuck my long hair under a baseball hat, and apply for a job. Unfortunately, my half-baked idea of disguising myself as a guy is flawed from the beginning. As Shakira says, these hips don’t lie.
Still, I like to think I might have pulled the whole thing off save for one thing: I know my boss.
Last month, we met at a bar, and after a fiery first encounter, it seems we’re destined to be sworn enemies.
Ethan Stone is ruthless and arrogant, a man I never would have crossed had I known how much he likes to toy with his prey.
He should just fire me and be done with it. Instead, he decides to make me his personal slave. Oh right, I think they’re calling it personal “assistant” these days.
It’s torture, all of it—his bad attitude, his ruggedly chiseled face, his desire to grind me into dust. Every one of our friction-filled battles burns hotter than the last. Description: Jack and I, we did everything backward. The day he lured me into his office-which was also the first day we met-he proposed. You’d think a guy who looked like him-a bit cold maybe, but still striking and very unattainable-would only ask the love of his life to marry him, right? You’d think he must be madly in love.
Nope. It was me he asked. A complete stranger who had never even heard of him. A stranger who had been dumped by her fiancé only weeks before. You’d think I’d laugh in his face, call him insane-and a few other names-then walk away as quickly as possible. Well…I did all those things except the walking away part.
It took him only minutes to talk me into a business deal…erm, I mean marriage, and only days for us to officially tie the knot. Happiest day of my life. Magical. Pop the champagne… Not. It was the worst day. Jack Hawthorne was nothing like what I’d imagined for myself.
I blamed him for my lapse in judgment. I blamed his eyes, the ocean blue eyes that looked straight into mine unapologetically, and that frown on his face I had no idea I would become so fascinated with in time.
It wasn’t long after he said I was the biggest mistake of his life that things started to change. No, he still didn’t talk much, but anyone can string a few words together. His actions spoke the loudest to me. And day after day my heart started to get a mind of its own.
One second he was no one. The next he became everything. One second he was unattainable. The next he seemed to be completely mine. One second I thought we were in love. The next it was still nothing but a lie.
After all, I was Rose and he was Jack. We were doomed from the very beginning with those names. Did you expect anything else?

Description: From New York Times bestselling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward comes an unexpected love story of secondhand hearts and second chances…
It all started with a mysterious blue note sewn into a wedding dress.
Something blue.
I’d gone to sell my own unworn bridal gown at a vintage clothing store. That’s when I found another bride’s “something old.”
Stitched into the lining of a fabulously feathered design was the loveliest message I’d ever read: Thank you for making all of my dreams come true.
The name embossed on the blue stationery: Reed Eastwood, obviously the most romantic man who ever lived. I also discovered he’s the most gorgeous. If only my true-love fantasies had stopped there. Because I’ve since found out something else about Mr. Starry-Eyed.
He’s arrogant, cynical, and demanding. I should know. Thanks to a twist of fate, he’s my new boss. But that’s not going to stop me from discovering the story behind his last love letter. A love letter that did not result in a happily ever after.
But that story is nothing compared to the one unfolding between us. It’s getting hotter, sweeter, and more surprising than anything I could have imagined.
Something new.
But I have no idea how this one is going to end…

Description: Marble isn’t the only thing that’s hard at this museum.
His body is as chiseled as Adonis. His lips are as sculpted as David. And his ego is the size of the Guggenheim.
You know the type—wolfish smile and the gravity of a black hole. The kind of man who sucks all the air from the room the second he enters it. My cocky boss thinks this internship was wasted on me, and he doesn’t hesitate to let me know.
But he’s wrong, and I’m going to prove it to him.
If I can stay away from his devil lips, that is.
Lips that cut me down and kiss me in the same breath, leaving me certain he’s on a mission to ruin my life.
And maybe my heart.

Description: Everyone hates parts of their job.
Maybe it’s the paperwork. Maybe it’s the day-to-day grind. Maybe it’s that client who never knows what they want, or the guy who always cooks fish in the microwave.
But not me. I love every corner of the Longbourne Flower Shop, every flower, every petal, every stem. I love the greenhouse, and I love Mrs. Bennet, my boss. I love creating, and I love being a florist. I don’t hate anything at all.
Except for Luke Bennet.
The Bennet brothers have come home to help their mom save the flower shop, and Luke is at the helm. His smile tells a tale of lust, loose and easy. He moves with the grace of a predator, feral and wild. A thing unbridled, without rules or constraint.
When he comes home to save Longbourne, I almost can’t be mad at him.
Almost.
He doesn’t remember that night I’ll never forget. That kiss, touched with whiskey and fire. It branded me like a red-hot iron. But it meant nothing to him.
Everyone hates part of their job, and I hate Luke Bennet.
Because if I don’t, I’ll fall in love with him.

Ok, so imagine this.
I’m halfway across the world in a bar in London celebrating my last year of vet school when I spot the sexiest silver fox I’ve ever seen. We flirt, we kiss, and I have one of the best nights of my life. I’m sure I’ll never see him again, which is why I don’t give him my real name, even though I’m down to give him my address, phone number, and throw in my social security number just to be sure.
Weeks later, I walk into Stonewall Investigations in Miami looking for help and who do I find?
A certain silver-haired fox with a cocksure grin and an accent that makes my knees melt.
So… about that help…
BECKHAM
I went back to London so I could bury my father and put our rocky past to rest. I wasn’t expecting to get handed a letter by a woman I’d never seen before, addressed to me in my father’s handwriting.
Opening it on the spot would be the emotionally mature thing to do. Drinking the evening away at a pub would be the emotionally therapeutic thing to do.
I chose the latter. That’s where I met one of the most interesting and attractive guys I’d ever chatted with, one I wanted to get to know from his head to his toes. One I was sure I would never see again.
Cut to three weeks later, when the object of my intense desire walks into my office looking for help with a murder that had been haunting him for years.
This was going to be an interesting case.

Description: Dr. Samantha ‘Sam’ Smith and Luke Jansen have gotten under each other’s skins since they met 10 years ago on the Royal Australian Naval base. They never thought they’d see each other again until their love of sharks brought them back together, giving their competitive and stubborn natures another chance to clash.
Sam, marine biologist and shark specialist, recently landed her dream job with the aquatic research department at Miami University. When her mentor invites her on the expedition of a lifetime, she eagerly takes the bait. The goal: obtain coveted, groundbreaking footage of Great White sharks breeding.
Unbeknownst to Sam, her mentor has invited one of the best shark experts in the business as well — a certain Aussie diver too arrogant and sexy for his own good. Luke, different after a life-changing diving accident, is the last person she expected to see.
Sam and Luke’s competitive streak picks up right where it left off as Sam realizes Luke knows almost as much about sharks as she does, despite her eight years of education. When a deep sea dive goes awry, Sam has to rely on Luke’s experience, both with sharks and as a Navy Clearance Diver, to get her back on board alive and in one piece. To make matters worse, a reckless rival crew surfaces, determined to beat them to the punch. Amidst the adventure and exhilaration of the hunt, Sam and Luke ignite a passionate spark that they slowly realize may have been simmering all along. Description: How do you know if a risk is worth taking? If you knew, there wouldn’t be any risk.
Following a disastrous appearance on a televised baking show, Sophie Copeland is certain things can’t get any worse. Several calamities later, Sophie finds herself in Green Valley, Tennessee with no plan, no place to stay, and no prospects. But at least she has a temporary seasonal arrangement with the famed Donner Bakery. And that’s something, right?
It’s not permanent, and it’s not a home, but it’s still something.
Enter Joel Barnes, a Green Valley mystery, wrapped in rumors, and a whispered connection to the local notorious biker gang. Joel’s got a name for being bad news, but he also has an apartment for rent. Intrigued by the dichotomy of Joel’s reputation and sexy southern pull, Sophie can’t help but be tempted, even though she knows—given her (bad) luck—she should stay far, far away. . .
Yet as everyone knows, without risk, there’s no reward.
‘No Whisk, No Reward’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book #3 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

DisclaimerI received this book free from the publisher in exchange for an honest review, but it does not influence my opinion of the book nor the contents of this review in any way.

Let me start by saying Penny Reid is one of my favorite authors. Now after reading that statement, you may be asking me, “Why the heck are you talking about the lovely and wonderful Ms. Reid when this is not her book?” To that I would say, you are correct! But you are also wrong. Ms. Reid an author and the founder of SmartyPants Romance, which is a kind of small publishing venture that she’s started up. Basically, other authors write extensions to her stories! No, that’s not right. Other authors write their own stories, just set in the Pennyverse, in the world she’s created and with character’s she’s written about as side characters. That makes more sense, right?

In the other SmartyPants Romance booksMs. Reid’s characters are a great touch of nostalgic window dressing. They weren’t main characters or even ultra-important side characters. For instance, in No Whisk, No Reward, Jennifer Donner-Winston and Cletus Winston, characters of Ms. Reid’s, played huge side-character and mentorship roles for Ms. Kay’s book!

No Whisk, No Reward follows Sophie Copeland, a pastry chef one a nation-wide baking tour as she’s making her way from the West Coast to Boston to help her best friend open her bakery. When her car runs into trouble in Green Valley, she decides to put down some temporary roots for a few months, and work at the local (but nationally recognized) Donner Bakery during the holiday season, and get into Boston in the New Year, just in time for her friend’s bakery opening. In doing this, she temporarily rents an apartment from hot-guy Joel, who is also her neighbor

My good sense will not be thwarted by your blue-green eyes and frowny brows, you magnificent biker beast.

I can say this with confidence now: No Whisk, No Reward was the Green Valley book that comes closest to matching Ms. Reid’s mastery. The characters were so bubbly and full of exuberance and personality, and I loved the community aspect that this book offered, which is huge in all Ms. Reid’s books. It takes place in a small town, yes, but also the story was never felt to be Joel&Sophie, against the world. We saw Sophie’s life outside of the flourishing relationship, got to know her co-workers and friends and honestly it gave the story a surprising depth that let us really get to know the characters and understand their lives.

The characters in this one were really so much fun. Her co-workers, Tempest (the main character in book two, Stud Muffin) and Joy were a bag of giggles and good times. They had totally distinct personalities, but each owned the page in their own way. And Sophie’s best friend Anna, the friend she’s moving towards to help open a bakery, was a quirky, fun personality of her own that struck hard, and we only got to know her through phone calls, as they were many states apart for the events of the book. But she had her own kind of strong presence for the events of the book.

Sophie her self was very strong character. She sassed the shit out of people when she got scared, was *mildly* spastic, but was quite casual about it. She owns her own quirks and her confidence in herself is also very casually attractive, and honestly kind of refreshing. I was getting tired of my heroines smoothing their bouncy, shiny curls in the mirror and eyeing their amazing curls and sighing that they weren’t enough. Like… representation I guess, but it’s just a smidge unreliable. Sophie was an stimulating character, because she had her lapses, personal quirks and her own anxiety, yes, but she was also owned everything she was and didn’t take a whole lot of crap when it was getting shoveled her way. But she also wasn’t a hard-ass, which is a fine line that Ms. Kay walks very well.

“Let’s see how long your patience lasts with my lack of aptitude in […] cooking.”
“You’re not getting out of this by pretending you’re too stupid to stir food in a couple of pots. Even the terminally incompetent can handle this recipe,” I assured him. “Now grab me a frying pan and a small saucepan.”
“Ooh, I like it when you’re bossy,” Joel drawled suggestively which both aroused and annoyed me because I knew he was trying to distract me.
“The novelty will wear off if you don’t follow my instructions.”

Joel himself was a treat. Speaking of representation, holy shy men!! Joel was a bit of a forced loner, and he really is awfully shy and I loved it. Sophie complimented him and he looked at his shoes, no longer able to hold that amazing eye contact. He was just trying his best and yeah, he was a man who would go to war for his woman, but he had some trouble getting there for himself. He wore his heart on his sleeve, and kinda broke me each time Sophie got a crack in his exterior wall and we got see what a big ole softie he is.

Another thing that sets this one apart from several of the Kindle Unlimited reads I’ve read, as well as some of the other SmartyPants Romance, this book actually had a climax at the end. While I’ve been reading a lot of books lately where there’s a smidgeon of trite unrest at the end of the book, it gets quickly resolved and the book ends with a tidy little bow. But No Whisk, No Reward actually lets the problem play out and gain momentum, until even the reader gets a bit panicky… the way it should be.

Overall, this was a great read. Really. Ms. Kay may have just made my list of authors to look out for, and I’m quite excited too see what else she has for me to explore in the future!! Thank you SmartyPants Romance for the title, of course, and to Social Butterfly PR for the work you do 😄

* spoilers included *

I was first intrigued by Crossing the Line by the blurb. I love dark romances, and haven’t been reading them of late, so this one really caught me.  He’s a killer (and a bit of a stalker), obsessed with a girl across the street. Sounds promising, right?

Unfortunately not.

There was just… nothing to like. The main character was more like a feather, subject to flitting around by whatever outside forces were pushing her one direction or the other. She seemed to have no personality of her own, and just did whatever the other characters told her to do. She had almost no personality and honestly felt like a doll that just flops around.

Hunter, the other main character, had a little bit more going for him, at least. He was supposed to be this badass assassin/spy, but the heroine literally recognizes him because she saw his tattoo. Like what kind of assassin kills someone and lets his tattoo show. Like uhhh. Wore a ski mask and gloves but forgot to wear sleeves to cover the forearm tattoo. uh huh. That’s the highlight of a true good assassin. It not like she spent a whole three chapters building him up as this #1 Assassin Badass who was Untouchable.

“I don’t want your time here to be terrible. I’m trying to make you as comfortable as I can until you go  home.”

In a bit of a backstory… Addy sees a crime (killing) she shouldn’t have seen, and is put in Witness Protection Program. But really she saw Hunter, the guy who’s been trying to figure out a way to approach her and introduce himself since she moved in, kill someone. So he tracks her down in the witness protection program and asks her out there. After two dates (where she honestly doesn’t seem to like him that much), she sees his tattoo and recognizes him as the killer she’s attempting to hide from.  So he kidnaps her and takes her to his cottage in the woods. A real Beauty-and-the-Beast scenario here.

It read like a really bad fanfiction, and I really didn’t enjoy this one. Not only was the main guy a big flop, but the main girl was a complete idiot. She spends two days in witness protection program, and then in a fit of loneliness, tells a guy who she’d just met online that she WAS in the program. Then talks to him on the phone. Uhhhhh… that’s all mighty suspicious. The toe, despite having zero chemistry and her having not-so-much interest in him while they were “dating” before he kidnapped her, fell in love fast once in the cabin. It was like somebody floored the accelerator, and they were at the “Love you’s” and her wishing she could be kidnapped forever. Ahhh… okay.

The whole Stockholm syndrome plot device / Beauty and the Beast retelling thing has been done time and time again, and done well! Unfortunately, this one was not for me and I will not be continuing the series.

Thank you Enticing Journey Promotions for the title, and for the work you do 😄

Description: Nothing about being a librarian prepared Thuy Nguyen for such a wide variety of casseroles. Or life in a small town. Or becoming a farmer.
But what can she do when her catastrophe-prone best friend begs her for help? After all, Maddy has always been there for Thuy. It’s time to return the favor.
It’s simple really, all she has to do is: learn everything about farming ASAP, save her BBF’s family business from disaster, and avoid being caught staring at Maddy’s biker brother, and his muscles, and his smile, and his soulful, sexy eyes.
Oh yeah, and she should definitely not fall in love with him.
Easy, right? . . . Right. ‘Prose Before Bros’ is a full-length contemporary romantic comedy, can be read as a standalone, and is book #3 in the Green Valley Library series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe

In the other SmartyPants Romance books, Ms. Reid’s characters were a great touch of nostalgic window dressing. They weren’t main characters or even ultra-important side characters. For instance, in Prose Before Brosour main character Drill is someone was also a side character in the Winston Brother’s books, and there were other side characters in this book who were side characters in Ms. Reid’s version.

Prose Before Bros follows Thuy Nguyen as she follows her pregnant and single best friend – Maddy Blount – to Green Valley, Tennessee in order to take over her Dad’s farm after he passes away. She knows nothing about farming, but manages to land a part-time job at the Green Valley library, where she is able to bring in a secondary income for the “family” and use her skills.

This how she meets Teddy “Drill” Blount, an Iron Wraith’s loyalist for 16 years and running. According to Drill, and his brother’s in the Iron Wraiths (a motorcycle gang), his brothers in the club are the extent of his family. But he can’t resist stopping over to see Maddy, his former sister, when he hears that she arrives in time for their father’s funeral pregnant and with a female in tow. But he finds that he can’t quite stay away from the spitfire that Maddy brought home with her…

“There’s a great quote by John Waters. He said we need to make books cooler gain. So if you go home with somebody, and they don’t have books, don’t fuck them […] Librarian’s gotta have her standards, even for one-night stands, Drill. Sorry.”
He hadn’t read a book since he was required to, back in high school. And he hadn’t read a  book since was required to, high school. He thought about lying, but knew she’d see right through it. “I’ll pick up some books right away,” he drawled. “Read right through ’em. And then maybe we can revisit the situation.”
She blushed. It was adorable.

It was a toe-curling moment, I’m not going to lie. Teddy is a sexy mother.

Thuy herself was a bit of a surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed her determination and strength of character, and it was evident throughout the whole novel. She was not willing to back down an inch in her belief in herself or her standards. If she wanted to learn to farm, she was damn well going to learn. If she needed a job, she was damn well going to find one. And if she needed to stand up for her beliefs in Young Adult literature, alternative forms of reading and teen life in the library, she was going to do so, even if it risked her job.

As a person who’s enriched in the publishing community as I am, I thoroughly enjoyed the discussions as she went toe-to-toe with the head librarian to bring the library into the modern age. There were three archaic computers – only two that worked – and teens were only allowed an hour of playing time, even if nobody was waiting. YA was nonexistent among the shelves, and weren’t put on shelves even if given by donation. Not to mention, there was no investment in large print books, comic books, graphic novels, ebooks or audiobooks. Not to mention, no inter-library lending. Awkward!

“Can I buy you a drink?”
She tilted her head, a small smile playing at the corners of her full lips.
“That’s probably a bad idea,” she said.
“You can talk to me about books,” he said, wiggling his eyebrows.”

Drill, or Teddy, depending on who you are talking to, was an interesting character, too. As an Iron Wraith, I was prejudiced against him from the beginning, but I was turned around by the end. I know Drill was present before in Ms. Reid’s book as a side character, usually side-by-side with Catfish, but I can’t remember how he was. If he was really thuggish, I’d be disappointed. I’ll have to see when I go back and reread all the Winston books here soon. But Ms. Yardley did a great job writing his emotions. His desperation really stank up the pages, especially there in the end.

This book was the first book where the Wraith’s actually felt like a threat. In the other books where the Wraith’s are present, especially in Love in Due Time, they were just kind of like an immaterial, non-believable threat. But in this one, I was on the edge of my seat and had no idea how this one was going to go down. The suspense was yanking me around by my heart

Thank you SmartyPants Romance for the title, of course, and to Social Butterfly PR for the work you do 😄

Kindle Unlimited TBR: Friends-to-Lovers!

Cover to Cover Book Blog Kat Snark covertocoverlit Book Blogger Book blog reader reading Kindle Unlimited Cover to Cover month of November Friends to Lovers

Today, obviously, we’re exploring books that feature one of my favorite tropes: friends-to-lovers romances!! There’s something about this trope that always hooks me. Maybe it’s the slow-burn, the questioning, the agony of the decision of whether to go for it, the wondering if he/she feels the same way… *shivers*

Disclaimer: I have not read any of these books. Some have been recommended to me by Twitter friendlies, some popped up on my Amazon account and I thought they sounded interesting! Don’t hate me if you don’t enjoy them (although I hope you do)!

Description:Never make a bet with a man who plays to win…
Especially not a man like handsome, arrogant Connor Pratt.
AKA the huge PITA who’s currently crashing in my spare room.
AKA my brother’s best friend since they were about six.
AKA the one guy who still makes me feel like an awkward tongue-tied loser.
But when Connor moved in, I got a glimpse of another side of him. Because, like me, Connor’s going through a nasty break-up. And, like me, he’s just doing whatever he can to get through it.
Unfortunately, his method involves drinking alarming amounts of whiskey and watching a lot of, um … movies … that make every inch of my skin flush.
I’m just trying to be helpful when I tell him that he should try my method: copious amounts of baked goods, sappy romantic comedies, and late nights spent whining with girlfriends.
But I should have known Connor would take that as a challenge.
Now, he says he’ll try my way of dealing with a break-up … but only if I agree to try his. Six month’s rent to the person whose method works best.
We call it the break-up bet. And I’m going to win. Except right now, it feels like there’s a whole lot more at stake than just rent money…

Falling. Hard.

Too bad I suck at taking it.
